Extreme Heat in California’s Kern County Impacts Carrot Crops

October 17, 2017

Carrot supplies, especially jumbo sizes, will be limited in California’s Kern County (Bakersfield) growing district for the next six to eight weeks due an abnormally long period of 100+ degree weather (68 days versus the 33 day average). The extreme heat has stunted growth and reduced size.

  • Orders for Markon First Crop Jumbo Carrots are being filled
  • Production will transition to Bakersfield, California over the next three weeks
  • Expect higher prices for carrots until size and supplies increase in mid-December
  • Packer label jumbo carrots are available in South Texas (from Mexico)
    • Supplies are sufficient
    • Prices are lower
