As Prices Climb, Rain May Further Reduce Onion Availability

July 19, 2017
Scattered thunderstorms, with between .03”-.19” of rainfall, are forecast in Southern New Mexico from Thursday, July 20 through Sunday, July 23. Rainfall may reduce onion availability as some New Mexico sheds do not have fresh onion storage capacity beyond one day of production. Prices continue to climb.
  • Markon First Crop Red and Yellow Onions remain available in California and New Mexico; white onion supplies are sporadic
  • All trucks will follow onion sheds’ transit temperature recommendations to maintain quality
  • Airflow is key to preserving shelf-life and deterring mold, especially upon arrival
  • New crop 2017–2018 onion harvesting will start in the Northwest in late August
