Weather Causing Sporadic Quality Issues in Salinas Valley

June 01, 2017
Erratic weather from late April to mid-May has caused sporadic quality issues in lettuce crops from California’s Salinas Valley. Some areas have been experiencing elevated insect pressure. Markon Inspectors have also observed heat and wind-related defects such as fringe burn, internal burn, and dense texture.
Harvesting and processing crews are working to minimize defects in commodity and value-added items, but will not be able to eliminate them completely. Markon Inspectors are working to select the best available quality for Markon orders.
